She didn’t know what I did…

This week, my niece admitted she didn’t really understand what I do.

She knew I used to work in an office for a steel company.
She knew I also did the coaching stuff.

But she didn’t know exactly what it was I did.

So, I explained that my background was in Supply Chain.

I had a very captive audience of three as I explained what that was, and how I had a rough understanding of the supply chain of their monkey bar set.

Their eyes got even bigger when I explained how everything in the room has a supply chain.

I went on to tell them that I had always ended up in business and supply chain improvement roles.

When I learnt more about coaching, I applied it to what I did and to supporting people in their personal lived.

I explained that I love change and improving things.
But what I love the most is guiding others, so they feel more comfortable with change.

In short, I guide people through change and transformation… in life and business.

Her response?
"Oh that’s cool… and yeah, I don’t like change."

Now, for a 12-year-old, this girl has been through some big changes.

We chatted about how not liking change is human nature.

We discussed those big changes we unfortunately have no control over, and how small changes are much nicer.

I explained how often a mistake I had seen in business is that people try to implement big transformations and forget the steps it takes to get there.

After all, you don’t get to the top of the mountain in one giant leap.
You get there through lots of tiny (and not so tiny) steps.

She got it.

Do you?

P.S. If you ever feel stuck explaining what you do, go talk to a little human who looks up to you (or, in my case, is at eye level).
